Gesso - Simon’s main tool for turning idea into art is gesso. It is an inspired, and probably unique choice. Not only is it an ancient base, for creating art, even used by the Egyptians. But, to make it not the base but the vanguard of his art is and was quite brilliant.
Beauty - He has the eye. Beauty, is not always beloved in the art world, but as people we crave it. Simon’s innate skill and ability, creates such powerful beauty it can simply take your breath away.
Depth - Conscious and unconscious thoughts fill his art, the making process, the diving physically into layers of gesso, coloured, reveal himself and for the right viewer, themselves. His work is thought out and yet exposes the unexpected.

Simon James is a British artist based in Munich, whose calm, grounded presence mirrors the clarity of his work. He trained in London before moving to Germany, drawn by the city’s mix of precision and quiet rebellion. That quiet, very British rebellion, led him to eschew an art school place for his own path and vision.
His practice moves easily between painting, drawing, and delving into new media., He is always circling the same questions of depth, expression, and media as a means of displaying both. Outside the studio he’s curious, dry-humoured, and exacting someone whose charm, passion and intense love of life is clear You sense the engineer’s mind and the poet’s patience: detail, structure, and emotion held in balance. To meet him is to understand that his art and his character are built from the same materials, discipline, curiosity, and a fascination with how things hold together.
