Material. Relief. Rhythm.

Gabriele Kurzbauer

Gabriele Kurzbauer constructs works in which textile becomes structure, shifting the image from flat surface into changing spatial relief.

Gabriele Kurzbauer’s practice operates between image and sculpture, using material, repetition and light to move the pictorial surface into physical space.

Working primarily with cotton fabric applied to canvas or wood, Kurzbauer soaks the textile in an adhesive mixture and shapes it while wet. As the material dries, folds, layers and subtle displacements become fixed, producing relief-like surfaces that retain visible traces of their construction.

Light and viewpoint form an active part of these works. Projecting surfaces cast shadows, details emerge and recede, and the appearance of the work changes as the viewer moves around it. Repeated and reduced forms establish rhythm, while small variations prevent the structure from becoming static.

The resulting works remain deliberately ambiguous between painting, textile and object. Material is not simply applied to a support but becomes the means through which surface acquires depth, physical presence and spatial tension.

Alongside these relief works, Kurzbauer also produces photographic collages in which reflections of nature are altered through painting, layering and transparent interventions, destabilising distinctions between image, reflection and constructed surface.

Recent presentations include a Coop Statement with Jeremias Altmann at PARALLEL Vienna 2026 and Together I at PAFE Artspace, Vienna, where she was included in the central exhibition of the space’s 2026 programme assembled by Altmann. In 2025 she presented Verflochten, a two-person exhibition with Altmann at Galerie G.20, Vienna. Earlier projects include Strukturen with Gerhard Himmer at Kunstraum G12, while in 2026 her work was also presented by Base AT4 at Affordable Art Fair Vienna. These recurring collaborations place Kurzbauer’s materially driven relief practice within an active contemporary Vienna context.
