Gala Čaki

Perception. Presence. Transformation.

Gala Csaky constructs paintings and time-based works in which perception, presence and imagined space continually shift between the familiar and the unknown.

Gala Csaky is a Serbian visual artist whose practice moves across painting, drawing, spatial installation and time-based work. Her work examines the unstable relationship between image and viewer, asking how perception changes when the artwork is understood not simply as an object, but as a space that is physically and psychologically entered.

This enquiry developed through her doctoral research at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Belgrade, where she investigated fantastic painting and ambient performance through what she describes as “breathing canvases”: works that challenge a fixed separation between viewer and viewed. She previously completed Master’s degrees in both Painting and Drawing at the Academy of Arts, University of Novi Sad.

Across bodies of work including The Labyrinth of Being, Time Resurrected and The Spatial Relations of My Visual Work of Art, familiar forms are placed within psychologically charged and often ambiguous environments. The work moves between the intimate and the universal, using figuration, spatial dislocation and shifts in atmosphere to explore presence, absence, recognition and transformation.

Csaky has presented work internationally across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas. Recent and selected presentations include the Beijing International Art Biennale at the National Art Museum of China, the London Design Biennale at Somerset House, the MAMA international project at MAXXI, Rome, and Empower Her at the Grand Egyptian Museum, Giza. Her 2026 programme has also included presentations at the United Nations Office at Geneva and Zuzeum Art Centre, Riga.
